Knight Mozilla Open News

About Knight Mozilla Open News

Knight-Mozilla OpenNews is about building an ecosystem to help journalism thrive on the open web. It's about producing next-generation web solutions that solve real problems in news. It's about supporting communities of developers and journalists as they make, learn and invent together. And it's about deploying fellows—and code—into news organizations to collaborate and innovate in new ways. Join us!

The news industry at a crossroads. Publishers are making important web technology decisions and investments that will shape how we experience the web for years to come. We want to provide news organizations with open technology options as they make those decisions.? Because news is at the center of many people's web use, this is an opportunity to reach a huge population with Mozilla's open web values and working open technology.

How the project works:

  • Open innovation and design challenges engage journalists, developers, and others on important issues facing the journalism industry, like online commments, open video, and monetization.
  • Learning labs featuring some of the brightest thinkers and makers in journalism and technology help participants learn about the industry, how to develop their projects, and how to create working prototypes using open development practices.
  • Participants work together on prototyping, demoing, hacking, and iterating their ideas into reality.
  • Over the life of the program, at least 15 fellows will be embedded with leading news technology partners like Boston.com, Al Jazeera English, Zeit Online, the BBC, and The Guardian.
